WineTools 0.9

Introduction

WineTools is a menu driven installer for installing about 90 Windows programs under the x86 (Athlon or Intel PC) processor architecture with the Linux operating system using Wine. This software lets you install the following Windows software:
  • DCOM98
  • IE6
  • Windows Core Fonts
  • Windows System Software
  • Office & Office Viewer
  • Adobe Photoshop 7, Illustrator 9
  • many other programs
It also sets up your .wine directory in the correct way, downloads the files to install from the web (only the free and shareware ones for sure), installs Windows fonts and lets you uninstall and configure your software. And it does much more than Sidenet, although older versions used to use a part of the configuration for IE6 (thanks for that!).

WineTools was initially written by Frank Hendriksen <frank||frankscorner.org> and was extended by me (Joachim von Thadden <thadden||web.de>) and Sven Paschukat <Sven.Paschukat||t-online.de>. It is licensed under the GPL.

The actual version wt0.9jo works with Wine versions 0.9[123].

20050211 This version is not supported by WineTools as there are too many drawbacks. not supported
20050111 There is only very experimental support for this version of Wine in WineTools. You should consider using Wine 20041019. There are several drawbacks with 20050111 like:
  • Acrobat Reader 6 does not work correctly
  • MS Access hangs very frequently
  • the Outlook splash screen is in the way and can not be removed by SplashScreenKiller
  • Outlook crashes when opening mails with attachments
  • Notes 6.5.x has problems while opening tabs (e.g. Replication)
wt2121jo rpm

20041201 In Internet Explorer 6 the buttons don't exist. The program is usable and you can use the empty buttons anyway. If you hover over them with the mouse the tooltip tells you which one is which. wt212jo rpm

You can download Wine from here. Older versions can be downloaded here.

Notes on some distributions:

  • RedHat, Fedora Core, SuSE and other rpm based distribution users use the rpm.

RedHat based distributions might not have an appropiate Xdialog installed. The one included in WineTools may or may not work with your distibution. If you encounter problems, you can find Xdialog-RPMs for your distribution at http://rpmseek.com/rpm-pl/Xdialog.html or at http://dag.wieers.com/packages/xdialog/.

  • other distributions use the tar.gz

  • Debian users look into their repository or use the tar.gz.
A note on internationalization (i18n): i18n is done by gettext. The gettext package must have a script named gettext.sh to work with WineTools. As some distributions don't have a valid gettext.sh script in their gettext package, WineTools provides a dummy one. Note that you do not have translations in that case!

Installation

For RPM packages just download and on a command line type
rpm -Uvh winetools-0.9-*.rpm
For the tar.gz unpack it as root to a temporary directory and execute
install.sh
from there. It is installed in /usr/local/winetools. If you want to have it somewhere else, change $BASEDIR in wt0.9jo and findwine.

Execute by typing (Not as root!)

wt
on a shell.

Note that you should definitely start with the menu entry "Base setup" and create a new fake Windows drive. If you want to save your old .wine directory, you can use the backup funktion of WineTools. Do not use as root. Do not use as root. Do not use as root.

Supported Software

You can find the list of supported software here. Note that the list is unsorted. If you want to have unsupported software included that is known to be working with Wine, send me an email with
  • name, version and language of the software
  • exact download location
  • website for informations
  • specialities for installation with Wine (config, command line parameters, ...)
It will be included in one of the next versions.

Note to authors of shareware or commercial producs

At the moment I have approximately 30.000 downloads per month... To support installation, configuration and running of your software on the Linux platform I recommend that you send me an unlimited, personal license of your software. Note that this is for testing and helping WineTools users only as I use Linux programs for my work.

Support

Send comments, bugreports, etc. to thadden||web.de. Don't blame me for the code. It's a horrible hack but it works.
Note:	This software comes with absolutely no warranty. You might get support or help for
the usage of Wine with WineTools from the author. You will not get any support for
software installations, Linux or Microsoft Windows from the author. If you need
help for pure Wine, ask the mailing lists at http://www.winehq.org/site/forums.
Do not bother the list with questions regarding WineTools based installations.
WineTools uses a very special setup to make as many as possible programs work.
Unfortunately this setup is not debuggable for Wine-Developers. If you want support,
pay me or buy the commercial versions of wine: CodeWeavers CrossOver Office
(http://www.codeweavers.com) for Desktop Applications or TransGamings Cedega
(formerly known as WineX) (http://www.transgaming.com) for playing games.

Professional support

If you would like to get professinal support for Wine, WineTools, your Wine installation or migration to Linux, write me a mail <thadden||web.de>.
